The simple answer is: no, you don't need to rent a car.
You can take a cab or super shuttle from the airport to the tournament hotel
(the Westin) and back. All of the debates will be held at the Sheraton which
is a very short walk across the street from the Westin.
Food options, listed with the closest to the westin/sheraton first, and a
few other stores of interest are:
In the hotel:
Westin restaurant (good food but typical high end hotel prices)
McNelly's Bar (burgers, sandwiches, etc)
Starbucks (not the full menu but lots of the coffee and frappucino options)
In the same complex as the hotel (you don't even have to go outside)
Landmark Health Club (sandwiches, salads)
Gateway Newsstands (convenience store with a surprisingly diverse lunch menu
sandwiches, salads, wraps)
Murphy's Deli (soup, sandwiches, wraps, gyros, salads)
Right next door (less than three minute walk)
Benihana
Just down the street (less than five minute walk)
Jack-in-the Box
Diamond Shamrock (yeah, it's a gas station but its open late and so you can
satisfy midnight munchies needs without paying gift shop prices)
Across 635 less than a ten minute walk (the hotel is just off this major
freeway. There is an overpass with street lights and waiting there slows you
down a bit but these places are still plenty accessible for a quick lunch)
Subway
Donuts (has an "opening soon sign" and looks ready to go but no guarantees)
Quiznos
El Pollo Feliz
CVS (the pharmacy: more munchies and other stuff you might need to survive
the weekend)
McDonalds
El Limeno (Salvadorean)
LBJ Cafe China (self proclaimed Super Buffet)
1.1 miles from the hotel (too far to walk for lunch between debates but
depending on your motivation not an unreasonable walk if you have more time)
Starbucks
Tam's Egg Roll
Subway
Joe's Pizza and Pasta
Dickey's BBQ
Black Eyed Pea
1.3 miles from the hotel (same basic area as the category just above but if
you decide to go to Chipotle it's at the far end of this strip of
restaurants/businesses)
Schlotsky's
Office Depot (not food but you know why it's listed here)
Rotisserie Grill
Taco Bueno
Chipotle

FedEx/Kinko's (see office depot)
Hotel Shuttle
The hotel has a van that will take you within a three mile radius of the
hotel. This service is, of course, subject to demand. So, if half the tournament
decided not to rent a vehicle then this service will probably be in great
demand and become difficult to use conveniently. If, as I suspect, only a few
schools decide to forgo the rental vehicle then this service might turn out to
be really useful and would certainly allow you to get a bit more diversity
and would make the last two sets of restaurants easily accessible.
Delivery
The normal pizza and Chinese delivery at a minimum. I'll post a complete
list of these soon.
