Colleagues: On behalf of the Tenure and Promotion Working Group that is preparing materials for the upcoming Third Developmental Conference on Debate to be hosted by Wake Forest next June, I am writing to solicit information and input related to the professional status of the debate coach at your university. Other members of the working group include Jarrod Atchison of Trinity University, Matt Gerber of Baylor, Kelly McDonald of Arizona State, and Jeff Jarman of Wichita State. For those of you who don't know me, I was the Director of Forensics at Baylor for five years in the 1980s and then for three more at KU and am currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the NDT. Our working group has the assignment of looking at the professional status of debate coaches and exploring whether a successor document to the Quail Roost Statement on the web site of the AFA might be created that could be used by debate coaches in various types of positions to explain to the administration of their particular school the appropriate professional standards for evaluating their work. One problem that coaches face again and again is that university administrations don't understand the demands of competitive debate and traditional standards for tenure and promotion are often inappropriate. This has caused many universities, including my own, to move to some kind of appointment for the debate coach other than that of a tenure-track faculty member. As a first step in carrying out our assignment, we want to gather information about the nature of your appointment and the standards by which it is evaluated. Of course, this information will be kept confidential and we will report only data within categories. Jarrod Atchison has graciously agreed to analyze this data. We hope you will take a moment and email him information about your appointment and the way it is evaluated. His email is jarrod.atchison at gmail.com. Please copy me on that message as well. My email is rrowland at ku.edu. We also would value any insights that you might have on the document that the working group eventually will draft. It is our hope that we can describe appropriate evaluative standards for a number of different types of appointments for debate coaches. As someone who has both been an active coach and a department chair for a decade, I know that the demands on coaches are enormous and very different from those of other faculty members. We want to create a document that will provide context for the role of coach and specify standards for evaluation that both reflect the pedagogical goals of debate and fairly account for the enormous workload required by contemporary debate. Debate has been the most important influence in my academic life. And my debate coach, Dr. Donn Parson, has been (and remains) an enormously influential mentor. For the future health of the activity, it is important that we identify reasonable standards for evaluating the professional accomplishment of debate coaches. We very much would value your participation in that effort. Robin Robert C. A stamped Registrar Seal from the student's school must verify that each student is registered for the Spring 2009 term. See the CEDA Constitution and Bylaws if you have eligibility questions. Entries: Each member school may enter teams provided the conditions are met in the cover letter of this invitation. The practice of entering hybrid school teams is allowed. Teams may be composed of two students from different member schools, as long as the judging requirements are met. A mixed team must be entered on the entry blank of BOTH schools, with the school identification of each student clearly indicated. Entry Procedures: No phone or email entries will be accepted. Please follow the instructions at the website. All entries made by March 6th, 2009 will pay the above charges. Entries will be accepted until Thursday March 12th, 2009, but entries made after March 6th, 2009 will incur a $25 late charge added to each of the above stated fees. NO registrations will be accepted after March 12th. If your fees are not paid in full by the time of awards, your school will not be eligible to receive sweepstakes trophies or advance in elimination rounds. Changes, including drops or name changes, will be accepted by phone or email. If you make a name change after you mail in the registration, you are required to supply a stamped registrar's seal verifying that each changed name student is enrolled for the Spring 2009 term before the end of check-in registration. Equipment: Students using AV equipment in their debate rounds are asked to transport their own equipment. We cannot guarantee any debate team will be placed in a room with available AV equipment. Divisions: Competition will be held in one division. This division is open to all eligible debaters. All debates will operate on a 9-3-6 model with 10 minutes per team for preparation. There will be a separate elimination round bracket for teams comprised of 2 Novices and declaring during the registration, their intent to participate in the Novice elims should they qualify. Judging Requirements: Each school is responsible for providing one qualified judge for the first two teams entered. If more than two teams are entered, the school must either provide additional qualified judges or pay a judging fee of $120.00 per uncovered team. In order to assure the best judging pool possible, ALL JUDGES ARE COMMITTED FOR A MINIMUM OF FOUR PRELIMINA(Quarterfinal Round in Novice bracket), whether or not their teams break to elimination rounds. If any team from a school breaks to elimination rounds, all judges from that school are committed to judge one round beyond the elimination of the school from competition. I would also be very grateful to any judge who would be willing to donate extra rounds. One of the largest expenses in running the tournament is hiring judges. Judging Practices: All judges must render a decision in each assigned round. One team must win and the opposing team must lose. Speaker points on a range of 0 - 30 must be assigned to each speaker. The smallest speaker point increment the tab room will count will be .5. Judging Philosophies: All judges must provide a judging philosophy statement or they cannot judge. Philosophy statements from all judges for a school must accompany the school's entry and be entered electronically on http://debateresults.com. Judging Assignment Procedure and Preference Forms: Assignment of judges will be done according to a mutual preference system from an available pool of critics. More details on the precise methodology will follow. Judges failing to pick up an assigned ballot will be assessed a $30.00 fee. This fee will need to be paid to the Treasurer prior to the Awards Assembly. Any ballot not picked up in rounds occurring after the Awards Ceremony, will also result in a $30.00 fee, billed to the school for whom the judge represents. Preference forms turned in before 3:00 PM Friday will be honored for the whole tournament. Forms turned in after the 3:00 PM deadline but before the beginning of Round 1 will be honored in all rounds after Round 3. No forms will be accepted after the start of Round 1. Beginning with the octofinal round until the semifinal round, we will also supply strike cards consisting of five critics selected by the mutual preference system. Each team will be allowed to strike one critic to determine the final panel of judges. To assure that judges are assigned fairly, it will be the obligation of coaches, judges, and contestants to indicate any conflicts on the entry form. We urge judges to avoid the appearance of impropriety by excusing themselves from hearing teams with whom they have recent close association or imminent future associations. Associations include judging and traveling with a team, coaching a member of a team, being a recent graduate of that school, being romantically involved with member(s) of the team, etc. Judges should also excuse themselves from judging teams from schools at which they are planning to coach next year. Statement on Discrimination and Sexual Harassment/Statement on Ethical Principles: The Cross Examination Debate Association is dedicated to the principle of free expression and the exploration of ideas in an atmosphere of civility and mutual respect. Related to this principle is the belief that all members of this community will have access to CEDA debate activities without regard to race, creed, age, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, or non-disqualifying handicap. In keeping with these principles, the CEDA National Tournament will abide by the guidelines and procedures of CEDA's Statement on Discrimination and Sexual Harassment and the CEDA Statement of Ethical Principles. Please inform your students that a Sexual Harassment Officer will be available to hear any complaints at the tournament. Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990: The CEDA National Tournament will make reasonable accommodations for all qualified tournament participants. The name of individuals and the nature of the accommodation requested should be noted in the registration process. Tobacco, Alcohol and Illegal Substances Policy: There will be no smoking, alcohol consumption or use of illegal substances in any competition at the 2009 CEDA National Tournament. Individuals violating this rule should expect to be asked to leave the tournament. We ask that all Directors of Forensics, coaches, and judges communicate this expectation to student competitors. Matching: will be power matched based on the records from all previous rounds. Rounds 3 and 5 will be high-high; the rest will be high-low within win-loss brackets. Elimination Rounds: Teams will break to elimination rounds and be placed in bracket order based on the following formula: win/loss record, adjusted team speaker points dropping the highest and lowest rounds, total team speaker points, double high/low, and strength of schedule. Brackets will not be broken in elimination rounds should two teams from the same school be scheduled to meet each other. Mixed-team schools will be granted "same team" status for matching purposes. In the event that two teams from the same school are scheduled to debate in the elimination rounds, the school involved must indicate to the tournament director which team will advance at the beginning of that round. Novice Break Out Elimination Rounds: As per the mission of the Cross Examination Debate Association, and recognizing the importance of Novice members of our community, the 2009 CEDA National Tournament will offer an additional Elimination Round bracket for teams comprised of 2 Novices as per the CEDA definition. The size of the bracket will be determined by the number of eligible Novice entries, but is expected to be at the Quarter-Final level. The Novice Breakout Bracket is expected to begin it's Quarter-Finals during the Double Octo-Finals round of the National Tournament, with its conclusion during the Quarter-Finals round of the National Tournament. All judges are obligated through the Double Octos of the National Tournament. When you mail your registration materials, you must indicate any teams comprised of 2 Novice debaters who would like to be considered for the Novice Breakout Bracket. Judge preferences will be in effect for the Novice Breakout Bracket, with explicit instructions to the tab room staff, to first place judges in the National Championship Bracket rounds, then to place judges in the Novice Breakout Bracket rounds. Teams qualifying for elimination rounds in the National Championship Bracket, will not be eligible to enter the Novice Breakout Bracket. Awards: Awards will be presented to all elimination round participants and to the top twenty speakers in the preliminary rounds. Sweepstakes awards will be presented as that information becomes available. Regional awards not already presented will be mailed to recipients at the conclusion of the National Tournament. Additional hosting arrangements and updates will be posted at www.cedadebate.org as they become available. We look forward to seeing you all in Pocatello in March! Glitch free administration. Hotel across street from campus. Schedule designed to let you go out to eat and party at night on Miami Standard Time (MIST). MIST begins after 10 pm, reportedly ends after 4 am. Rounds began at 10 am and 9 am on the weekend days. Invitations to be flown to Miami to participate in their webcast and broadcast public debates. A couple of you have looked for it on the website. Here is what you should do: Get from your Admissions or Registrars office a simple document with your name, school name, and names of all debaters you may plan to bring (even last minute subs). List their names on the document. Have the Registrar/Admissions Rep review the names, sign the form, date it, and attach your University/College Seal. Mail those documents to me by the postmark date in the invitation. It can be very similar to what you mail Tim O'Donnell for NDT purposes. PLEASE MAKE SURE THE CEDA ELIGIBILITY LANGUAGE APPEARS ON THE DOCUMENT. It is below in quotes. Following that is a sample form I use for NDT, CEDA, and PRP. "officially enrolled undergraduate students in good standing at the college or university they represent in competition" CEDA allows each member institution to define what "good standing" means. Also remember, if a student has already earned their undergraduate degree, they may still compete at CEDA if they earned that degree in the time block which CEDA occurs. EXAMPLE FORM: TO: Tim O'Donnell--NDT Darren Elliott--CEDA FROM: Darren Elliott--KCKCC The following list of students are officially enrolled undergraduate students in good standing at KCKCC during the Spring 2009 semester. I will be at Northwestern this weekend with receipts if anyone would like to pay me directly there. I can accept cash or check (made out to the National Debate Tournament). If you have to pay by credit card you may do so on the AFA website, but this is really a pain for me. If you do that, then make sure that you send me a copy of your electronic receipt showing that you have paid so I can certify to John Fritch that you have paid and your team can be put on the ballot. If you will not be at Northwestern, you can send a check to me at 324 Franklin St., Cambridge MA 02139. It must reach me before the First-Round ballot goes out. Our high school tournament is next weekend and I will not have time to track people down to collect this money. I would really appreciate it if as many people as possible could get this taken care of at Northwestern this weekend. Docs can be uploaded electronically Message-ID: <498DCCA0020000930002456C@mymail.kckcc.edu> Greetings Debate Community! Thanks to the work of Jon Bruschke, you can now upload your eligibility documents electronically at debateresults.com as opposed to certified mail. Once you receive your elig. document from your Registrar (most of you might already have these for NDT purposes), you should scan them to your computer and save them as an image file (.jpg, etc). Once you have done this you can go to debateresults.com On the left hand side under Account Management you will see a link to submit CEDA/NDT Elig docs electronically. Choose that link and follow the directions. Once uploaded I will be able to see them and verify eligibility. If your NDT document did not include the same names of those you might bring to CEDA, or if you did not submit NDT docs, please make sure the CEDA submission includes the names of all debaters you plan to bring to CEDA. The document should include language similar to the CEDA constitution requirements for CEDA eligibility, the names of your debaters, graduation dates if applicable and if graduated in this time block, a signature and date by your College/University Registrar or designee, and a seal of the College/University. You may want them to ink the seal in order for it to show up once scanned. If you have any problems with the upload, please contact Jon or myself. Again, Jon's work is making this process easier and moving us towards more efficiency. thanks, chief Darren Elliott Director of Debate and Forensics--KCKCC CEDA President From delliott at kckcc.edu Tue Feb 10 01:00:18 2009 From: delliott at kckcc.edu (Darren Elliott) Date: Tue, 10 Feb 2009 01:00:18 -0600 Subject: [CEDA-L] Still seeking "Soul"ful Swinger Message-ID: <4990D1A20200009300024795@mymail.kckcc.edu> KCKCC it still interested in a swing partner for JV for the upcoming Soul of America debates in Manhattan, KS. We know this is a busy time for all, but there are some important updates for CEDA Nationals hotel items. The community has reserved most of the primary block at the Red Lion River Inn. They still have kings available, but if you need double beds you should contact the Best Western Cotton Tree. They have made available a block of 60 double bed rooms. They are working on a link to register on-line. However, please start making your reservations today. The Best Western is within walking distance (4-5 minutes) of the Red Lion (which will house the opening awards as well as the last day of elimination rounds). This area is also serviced by our daily shuttles to campus. They also offer free wireless internet and hot breakfast. People may call 208-237-7650 to make reservations under "CEDA". If there are any problems, Mike is the contact. The block expires March 1, but we it will likely fill before that date. Please do not contact the Holiday Inn. They are also out of non-smoking doubles at this point. We are working hard to control costs for this tournament and we encourage you to minimize your car rentals and look into the airport shuttling we have suggested. If you are facing extreme financial situations, please contact us and we can help you make alternate rooming arrangements. We are looking forward to seeing you all in March. We hope you will be joining us and supporting the Rocky Mountain Region, Idaho State, and Sarah Partlow as they put on a fine National Tournament. A couple things to tend to at this time: 1. Please enter on debateresults as soon as you can. I know its a busy time of year, but we are planning events, and Sarah is working hard to ensure enough hotel availability to meet everyone's needs. We have added the Best Western to our block today and the information is posted on edebate, ceda-l, and updated on the invitation. Please enter soon so we have an idea on numbers. And again, if you have financial difficulties when it comes to housing, please contact Sarah for alternatives. 2. Remember to submit awards via the website by Feb. 20th. 3. You can use debateresults.com to upload scanned .jpg files of your eligibility documents, saving you time and hassle of mailing them. 4. Please inform me of any teams you have that are comprised of 2 novices (following the CEDA definition) that you want to be eligible for the Novice Elim rounds. I envision it mostly as a roundtable on experiences in putting on public debates and ways to effectively incorporate public debates into university pedagogy. If folks have specific abstracts or paper proposals, we could also do it as a traditional panel. I would also be willing to moderate/chair the panel, but would probably have more success getting it accepted if someone else would chair. Let me know - I have to teach until about 8 pacific time tonight, but I can crank it out between 8 and midnight if there is interest. Let me know. I know many of us shared our feelings for him last year when we first heard of his passing, but I wanted to ensure that he will never be forgotten. It is never easy to think of someone so young passing, but I hope what Matt meant to many of us as a friend, and what he stood for in the community will never be forgotten. For those of you who never had the pleasure of meeting Matt or heard of him, please take time to read the following that was published last year in the Tallahassee Democrat below. _______________________ FSU doctorate helps complete cancer victim's journey _http://www.tallahassee.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080210/FSU01/80210031 4/1010&template=printart_ (http://www.tallahassee.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080210/FSU01/802100314/1010&template=printart) By Audrey Post SPECIAL TO THE DEMOCRAT Tallahassee's latest college graduation was held in a hospital room, not the Civic Center, but it incorporated all the special details of a conventional commencement ceremony, plus a few more. Decked out in ceremonial cap and gown, Matthew Allen Grindy lay propped up in his bed at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital as President T.K. Wetherell, Provost Larry Abele and Communication Dean John Mayo ??? all in full academic regalia ??? conferred upon him the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Speech Communication. There was even a ceremonial "hooding," the attachment of the gown's hood signifying the wearer is a Ph.D. that's conducted traditionally before the candidates march in for graduation. But the 50 or so people gathered in the hospital room and spilling out into the hallway had to settle for Wetherell's reciting of the "Hymn to Garnet and Gold." "If we were standing in the Civic Center," Wetherell said, "someone with a much better voice than mine would be singing right now." Grindy didn't care. Days earlier, he had ceded victory to the cancer spreading throughout his body and into his brain, opting out of further treatments that would bring at best only months, not cures. He focused on trying to manage the ever-increasing pain and made arrangements to go home to hospice care. Then he found out Friday morning that graduation was coming to him. Grindy's father said he asked for an adjustment of his pain medication so he could be alert for the ceremony. Davis Houck, his major professor, said he insisted on being dressed in the cap and gown he brought him, not merely having it draped over him. The price of their dressing him in it, everyone knew, would bring excruciating pain. "He was like, 'No, no, put it on. I want it on,'" Houck said. Wearing the smile that seems to have been ever-present no matter how tired he was or how intense the pain, the 28-year-old doctoral student and FSU's director of debate for the past two years accepted his doctoral diploma and mentally checked one more thing off his list. "Even though I knew I probably wouldn't survive, there were some things I still wanted to accomplish. I didn't want my experience to be nasty overall, and I feel like I got that," he said afterward. "Statistically, with my diagnosis, I should've been dead a long time ago. But I fought back, and today I accomplished another one of my goals. "It's just a piece of paper to some people," he said, "but it's more than that to me." "It's your life's work," said his wife, Amber Bell. Among his other goals was a successful debate team, which he got last year. He also was named the top graduate student-coach in policy debate in the country. He was still coaching debaters by phone a week ago, as he finished his last round of radiation therapy at Moffett Cancer Center in Tampa, said his mother, Cindy Ronnings. "He's been in debate since high school. He loves it, and he cares so much for his students," she said. Grindy met his wife at undergraduate school at Western Washington University, where she was his debate partner. The couple moved together to Miami, where he was assistant debate director at the University of Miami while he got his master's degree. His FSU debaters weren't there for the graduation. FSU was hosting the opening rounds of the Florida Invitational Forensics tournament Friday afternoon, and they were in opening rounds of competition. They were following his lead. And when the guy who never gave up said he'd had enough, his friends, family and faculty took over. A lot of people wanted to know whether Grindy had done enough work to earn his degree. Grindy's father, Scott Grindy of Everett, Wash., said he and Wetherell played phone tag for two days this week but Friday morning, everything came together and the ceremony was set for 4:30 p.m. "FSU does not move this fast on anything," said Houck, who also was Grindy's co-author of the recently released book, "Emmitt Till and the Mississippi Press." "A lot of people played a part, but if anyone deserves the credit, it's Nancy Marcus. She worked the phones with T.K. and Larry and got it done." There as even a little "Pomp and Circumstance" on the guitar, thanks to Andrew Opel, one of the Communication Department faculty. The degree is not an honorary one, the provost said. "This is a full-blown degree." Both the provost and the president said they think it's the first hospital graduation FSU has ever conducted. Even Grindy himself was surprised, although he admitted with a little chuckle that "some part of me thought that, after I pass, they'll give me a doctorate. But for all these important people to come here, for my family and friends to do this for me, I'm amazed." But being in pain, on medication and overcome with emotion didn't diminish his awareness that he had a bully pulpit, and he seized the opportunity. "If I can make a shameless plug in these times of university financial troubles, my departing wish is debate, particularly policy debate, be preserved," he said. "I don't have the energy to talk about it, but it made me the person I am." The district chairs are ready to collect money from teams at the district tournament that are planning to apply. If you pay them, they will send me a list of who has paid and you will have no problem getting your payment in by the deadline. If you are not planning to go to districts, you should pay me directly by sending me a check, made payable to the National Debate Tournament, to 324 Franklin St. Cambridge, MA, 02139. Please note that if your distict is the later weekend this year, the second round applications are due the Monday after districts instead of the following Thursday. It would therefore be best for you to pay your money to your district chair. Sherry -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It will take you to links to pay for your membership, entry fee to CEDA Nats, Uncovered team fees, etc. One more reminder--you do NOT need to mail eligibility forms if you upload them to debateresults.com. The leadership of CEDA and the NDT are working together to provide a coordinated response to the Miami administration. I applaud the efforts of individuals to reach out to administrators and positively convey the importance of debate. We also need folks who are familiar with the university and department to help tailor our response. If you are in such a position or know of someone who is, please have them contact me. I would also reinforce Justin Green's prescient call from earlier this semester. In this economic climate, even programs with strong institutional support for the activity will experience very difficult decisions. If you see that your university is considering a substantial reduction in support, please reach out to the organizations and local community as soon as possible. No one has a magic solution here, but we need to do our best to explain the values of keeping the activity central to university life, even if budgets decline. I know we will be having a larger conversation on this subject this spring, but in the interim please take the time to support this program. This holds a lot of personal significance for me, but I think it is a very bad omen in general for the debate community. While the situation there has been deteriorating for a bit, I think the financial situation everywhere has the possibility of making debate budgets more vulnerable. It is in the best interest of all of our jobs and teams and families and the community that we proactively work to fend off this danger. I don't know if the Miami program can be saved, but I would like it to at least go down fighting. In this vein, I'm getting together a number of alumni to write in support of the program and its value to Miami. While these people have personal experience with the team itself, I think some outside letters to the administration could be helpful. A few quick facts, Miami is a long time participant in the NDT, attending 19 times from 1976 to ?2009. Miami is the only squad other than Westpoint to host the NDT twice. The debate team is one of the oldest student organizations and was founded around 1909. The team is currently funded through the department of communication which has also eliminated its graduate program meaning no graduate assistants which have been a major part of the coaching at Miami. The department and the school, I assume, has decided to eliminate all debate coaching positions and the team's budget for the?foreseeable future. The problem is, once these things are gone, they are very difficult to restart. If you could help me by writing a letter of support for the program to any or all of the following persons, expressing the value of debate and the value of the program, I would appreciate it.
